Push/pull/legs vs full-body: pick by schedule, not ideology

Splits distribute the same weekly volume differently. The right one is whichever your real week can execute — 3 days says full-body, 5–6 says PPL.

Split debates are fought like theology and settled like logistics. Push/pull/legs and full-body both build muscle — the research on training frequency keeps finding that when weekly volume is matched, the split barely matters. What matters is which one your actual week, with your actual job and your actual sleep, can execute for months.

What a split actually is

A split is a scheme for distributing your 10–20 weekly hard sets per muscle across the days you train. That’s all it is. PPL puts a muscle’s whole weekly allotment into one or two focused sessions; full-body deals every muscle a few sets every session. Same weekly totals, different packaging — which is why the muscle can’t tell the difference, and your calendar can.

The decision table

  • 2–3 days a week available → full-body. Three full-body days hit everything twice-ish per week with sane session lengths. Running a 6-day PPL on a 3-day reality means each muscle gets trained once every 10+ days — the volume never accumulates.
  • 4 days → upper/lower. The boring, nearly-optimal middle. Every muscle twice a week, sessions under an hour, weekends free.
  • 5–6 days → PPL earns its popularity. Shorter, focused sessions; each muscle still lands twice per cycle; and pushing day’s fatigue doesn’t contaminate pulling day.

The hidden variable is missed-day fragility. Miss a full-body day and everything still got trained twice that week. Miss leg day on PPL and legs went a full week untouched — and “I’ll make it up” is how one missed session becomes a reshuffled, then abandoned, week. If your schedule is chaotic, choose the split that degrades gracefully.

Session length is the silent killer

Full-body’s real cost is that doing it properly — 4–6 compound movements with honest rest between sets — takes 60–75 minutes. Cram it into 45 by cutting rest and every set gets worse. PPL sessions fit in 45–60 minutes precisely because they’re narrow. Match the split to the time slot you genuinely have, not the one you have on your best week.

When to actually switch

Legitimate reasons: your schedule changed; your sessions consistently blow past their time slot; a muscle you care about is provably lagging and needs a dedicated slot; or you’ve stopped progressing and checked the real culprits first.

Illegitimate reason: it’s been six weeks and a new split feels like progress. Program-hopping resets the one thing that drives everything — the accumulating log of loads and reps on consistent lifts. Every switch throws away weeks of comparison data. Switch rarely, deliberately, and keep the core lifts constant across the change so the through-line survives.

The split that wins is the one still running in March

Adherence dominates everything in this decision, which is the theme this blog keeps arriving at from different directions: the best training program is the one you’re still doing in March. A theoretically inferior 3-day full-body executed 50 weeks a year beats an optimal PPL executed in enthusiastic 3-week bursts, and it isn’t close.

This is also where tooling quietly matters. Momentum ships ready-made programs across the whole table — PPL, upper/lower, full-body, strength bases, glute-focused — or builds one around your stated days and equipment, and then does the part no split can do for itself: tracks whether the weekly volume per muscle head actually landed, whatever the packaging. Because the muscle never cared which day it was trained on. It only cares that the sets arrived.

The 30-second decision

Count the days you can really train — the number from your worst normal week, not your best. 2–3: full-body. 4: upper/lower. 5+: PPL if you want it. Then stop deciding and start logging, because the split was never the variable that mattered most.
